Mary F. Bell

August 2, 1921 — March 13, 2017

Bell, Mary Falconer "Mimi", 95 years young, joined her Savior Jesus Christ on March 13, 2017.

Born on August 2, 1921 in Wichita, Kansas, Mary attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts where she met and married the love of her life, Herbert who was attending Harvard University. Herb and Mary began their married lives in Illinois, Herb's home state. Mary had deep desire to help everyone she could, which led to them adopting two children, Fred and Kathy.

Mary was always active in community affairs, particularly social justice issues which her mother and grandmother actively encouraged.

Moving back to Louisville again in 1968, Mary and Herb found a home in Anchorage and at Anchorage Presbyterian Church. Mary helped found the Berrytown/Griffytown Improvement Organization, focusing on bringing a much needed neighborhood voice in the political community. In 1967, she became President of the Eastern Area Council, an interracial, interdenominational civil rights activist organization. In the early 1980's, Mary served on the board of Association of Community Ministries, the forerunner of the current Eastern Area Community Ministries.

Mary served as an Elder at Anchorage Presbyterian where she has been a very active member since the sixties. She has delivered food through Meals on Wheels, she has built houses with Habitat for Humanity, and she has mentored youth at the Berrytown YMCA and was recognized as a winner of the WLKY Bell Award.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and son, Fred Bell, Sr.

Mary is survived by her husband of 72 years, Herbert and her daughter, Kathy Michaels of Elgin, Illinois; Dorothy (Bell) Holzknecht (Tony), daughter-in-law who has been at Mary and Herb's side, caring for their needs for many years, particularly since they required elder care. She has four grandchildren, Fred, Jr., Tyler (Jill), Chrissy and Karl; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2017 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Anchorage Presbyterian Church (11403 Park Rd, Anchorage, KY 40223.) A memorial service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at church, with a luncheon to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Anchorage Presbyterian Church or a favorite charity of your choice.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the skilled healthcare staff at The Forum at Brookside for their loving care and compassion for Mary.
