Martha Ann Swartz

November 2, 1935 — January 10, 2019

Listen to Obituary
Martha Ann Swartz, 83, of Louisville, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 10, 2019. Her life verse was "The joy of the LORD is your strength." - Nehemiah 8:10.

She was born on November 2, 1935 in Shelby, Ohio to the late Leonard and Alice (Warren) Waines. She is also preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, Edward R. Swartz.

Martha was a longtime, active member of Southeast Christian Church. She faithfully attended her early morning Adult Bible Fellowship class at Southeast. She loved her service as Greeter at the top of the escalator and always made a point to look everyone in the eyes and speak to as many as she possibly could. She volunteered weekly in the LifeBridge ministry.

She enjoyed Classic Worship, Wednesday morning Bible study, Senior Lunches, and her Dorcas Circle group all at Southeast Christian. She served in many roles within the Dorcas Circle, but most recently was in charge of their mission work and had to transfer that duty to someone else in the weeks before she died. Recently, she had lived in Eastgate Village for six years and was blessed to join a Monday morning Bible study that became a close circle of friends to her. She was an avid quilter and loved her Tuesday quilt group "Friends 'N Stitches". She made quilts for all four of her children.

She regularly attended quilt retreats and annually traveled to Houston for the International Quilt Festival. She loved to travel with her husband when he was alive and with friends after his passing. She always had trips on her calendar. In the last few years, she ceased her international travel but she continued to travel within the US with Friendship Force of Louisville and traveling groups from Southeast Christian Church. She was also very active in her community through Sister Cities of Louisville. She and her husband served many years as co-chairman of the Mainz Sister Cities program. In earlier years, she and her husband supported Young Life Louisville, serving on the board.

She supported her husband in his role as a Rotarian by hosting fellow Rotarians in their home and traveling on home exchanges as well. She participated in Christian Women's Club for many years and was introduced to Bible Study Fellowship. She was part of the original group that drove to Columbus IN every week to attend BSF there so that they could start it here in Louisville. It was through BSF that she recommitted her life to the Lord and served as Discussion Leader and Children's Leader. Martha was an avid sports fan of all sports just like her father. She especially loved the University of Louisville girls basketball program and had season tickets with her "posse" of friends that faithfully cheered at the games.

She credits her physical strength to her regular attendance in her "Splish Splash" water aerobics group at the YMCA. She had a special group of friends that loved celebrating birthdays together. She was in a book club. She loved attending the Louisville Orchestra coffee concerts. Her love for Louisville Orchestra was shared with her husband as they had season tickets for years when he was alive. She always made time for her grandchildren's activities and recently celebrated the birth of her first and only great-grandchild. She loved the Lord and His Word and she loved people.

Martha is survived by her children, Gail Arnold (David) , Nancy Eubanks (Philip),
Jeffrey Swartz (Paige), Joan Graybeal (Todd), grandchildren Joseph Eubanks, Hillary Swartz, Alec Swartz (Rachel), Mark "Jake" Swartz, Andrew Graybeal, Aaron Graybeal, great grandchild Alec Jeffrey "AJ" Swartz.

She is also survived by her sister Elizabeth Barnhart (Michael), sister-in-law Jeannette Markle, nephews Steve Barnhart, Doug Barnhart (Gillian), Greg Barnhart (Leslie), Deron Barnhart, David "Dave" Markle (Linda), James "Jim" Markle and several great-nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (235 Juneau Dr. Louisville, KY 40243).

Visitation will also be from 9:00 am to 11:00 am in the Fireside Room at Southeast Christian Church (920 Blankenbaker Pkwy. Louisville, KY 40243) with the celebration of her life at 11:00 am in the Chapel at Southeast Christian Church. There will be a private family burial.
