Listen to Obituary

Martha Jean Gagel passed away on October 19, 2026, just two days after her 83rd birthday. Born on October 17, 1943, Martha lived with a spirit that was impossible to ignore and a presence that brought energy, laughter, and personality wherever she went.

Martha was feisty and spunky, someone who loved to get dressed up and dance and who was so often the life of the party. She had a playful way about her, never afraid to stir the pot or poke the bear, and those who knew her will remember that lively spark with affection. She brought color to the lives around her, not only through her humor and bold personality, but through the joy she found in everyday things.

She enjoyed crafting and generously shared her creations with friends and family, giving from both her hands and her heart. Martha also loved playing BINGO, going gambling of any kind, and hunting for treasures at yard sales. A devoted University of Kentucky fan, she proudly cheered on her team in her UK apparel, wearing her loyalty with pride and enthusiasm.

Martha was a member of Mill Creek VFW Post 5421. She was also a huge animal lover who believed in giving rescues good homes, reflecting the compassion that was an important part of who she was.

Above all else, Martha’s greatest pride was her family—her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. One of the most meaningful chapters of her life was reuniting with her firstborn daughter after 60 years of separation, a blessing that held deep significance in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Gagel; twin sister, Margie Ackerman; daughter, Terri Wiley Cox; parents, Arthur George and Elizabeth Carroll; sister, Patricia Hartlage; great-grandsons, Nathaniel and Noah and her lifelong friend, Gean Lacefield.

Martha leaves behind to cherish her memories, her children, Tracy (Jimmy) Hupp, Sally (Scott) Stoermer and Sonny (Misty) Wiley; sister, Rosalie Webster; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on October 26, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Louisville, 10304 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, Kentucky 40272. A funeral service will follow there at 6:00 p.m.

Martha Jean Gagel will be remembered for her spirited nature, her generosity, her love of fun, and the deep love she carried for her family. Her memory will remain a treasured part of the lives she touched.
