Marlene Olivia Mitchell, aged 80, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, peacefully passed away on Monday, June 1, 2026. Born on October 10, 1945, in Oakland, California, to Clyde and Loyola (Hill) Mitchell, Marlene was a cherished mother, sister, aunt, and friend.
A graduate of Southern High School in 1963, she pursued her passion for nursing by earning her degree from Jefferson Community College in 1990. Marlene devoted over 30 years to caring for others as a registered nurse, serving at various hospitals and nursing homes in the Louisville area. Marlene was proud of the continuing care that she provided as a Hospice nurse to her patients and their families. Following her nursing career, she continued her compassionate work with Home Instead, providing care to patients in their own homes.
Marlene’s nurturing spirit extended beyond her profession. She was an avid reader with a special fondness for science fiction, and during her time at Azalea Hills, she contributed generously to their library and assisted with daily tasks. Her love for animals was evident in the devoted care she gave to her beloved cats. As a member of St. John Paul Parish Catholic Church, she participated in a card writing ministry, where her beautiful handwriting was a treasured gift.
Above all, Marlene treasured her family. She is lovingly remembered by her son, Michael "Kailen" Burkhead; daughter, Regina Frances (Dennis) Gagich; brother, Dennis (Donna) Mitchell; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will forever hold her memory dear. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Loyola Mitchell.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, East Louisville Chapel, 235 Juneau Drive. A celebration of Marlene’s life will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
