Markel Ray Ladd, age 28, of Louisville, KY, passed away on July 28, 2025—just one day before his 29th birthday. Born July 29, 1996, Markel was known for his incredible work ethic, his deep love for family, and his generous heart. He often juggled multiple jobs at once and never hesitated to go out of his way to help others.
Markel had a special bond with animals and cared for all kinds throughout his life. From a young age, he had a love for trucks, which eventually led him to earn his CDL and pursue a career in commercial driving. He was a longtime employee with the City of Louisville and most recently worked with Messier & Associates.
He was proudly engaged to Jazmin Chambers and was the devoted father of their beloved daughter, Rayla—his whole world. Becoming a “girl dad” was one of his greatest joys in life.
Markel graduated from Central High School in Louisville, KY, in 2014, and later from Simmons College of Kentucky. He was also a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He was baptized at New Horizon Full Gospel Baptist Church, where he occasionally played the drums—a talent he taught himself. He had a passion for music, sports, and adventure. He played both football and basketball growing up and continued to be a devoted fan of the Lakers. Kobe Bryant was his all-time favorite player. He also loved trains—one of his favorite movies was The Polar Express, which brought out the joy and imagination that stayed with him into adulthood.
Markel is survived by his daughter, Rayla Ladd; his fiancée, Jazmin Chambers; his father, Darryl (Tracy) Ladd Sr.; his sister, Ashley Ray (on his mother’s side); and several brothers and sisters on his father’s side, Derryl Ladd, Precious Ladd, Paige Ladd, Derryl Ladd, Derriane Ladd, Daeton Ladd, Dariel Ladd, Keydon Ladd, along with his paternal grandparents Evon (Ricky) Fulton. He also leaves behind many loving host of aunts, uncles, extended family and friends. . He was preceded in death by his mother, Lynette Stark, and his grandparents, William and Lorraine Stark and George Unseld.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions – Southwest Louisville Chapel (10304 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, KY 40272). A funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM, with burial at Green Meadows Memorial Cemetery.
Markel’s life was a beautiful mix of strength, kindness, hustle, and love. He touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
