Mark Edward Hickey

Mark Hickey, 64, died peacefully on Monday, April 28, 2025 with his family beside him. People thought of him as a cool, funny guy who may or may not have been in a rock band. He is and was cherished as a husband, father (and longtime cat-dad), son, brother, cousin, uncle, and dear friend.

Born in Louisville on September 30, 1960, Mark was the youngest child of Jean and Bruce Hickey. He attended the University of Louisville. A hard worker throughout his life, he started out as a paperboy in childhood. He was most recently a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

His was truly a larger-than-life personality. He had a great sense of humor and would talk at length to just about anyone. He was a devotee of rock and roll and the delta blues, a movie enthusiast, and a coffee and chocolate connoisseur. As an avid reader who always relished learning, he took special delight in history and space exploration. He also ardently followed both Reds baseball and professional football (any game would do, but he loved his Chargers best of all).

Mark was the beloved husband to his wife of thirty-five years, Melanie, and the devoted father of his daughter, Jil; the little brother to two sisters, Cathy Casten and Ellen Smith (David) and one brother, Rob Hickey (Debi); and an uncle to six nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and nephews. He doted on a long line of adoring, slightly spoiled cats and shared a deep and unshakable bond with his mother, Jean, until her death in 2006.

A celebration of Mark’s life will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, East Louisville, 235 Juneau Dr.
