Marilyn Joyce (Bir) Scharrer Caruthers

Marilyn Joyce (Bir) Scharrer Caruthers, 87, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 9, 2026. Born on July 2, 1939, Marilyn was the daughter of Sylvester and Mary (Basham) Bir. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Vernon Scharrer and Henry "Zeke" Caruthers.

Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Missy Hardin (Rudy), her son, Eric Scharrer (Rose), her grandchildren, Samantha McKinnon (James), Amanda Meyer (Trey), Jessica Scharrer (Brennan Norval), Wyatt Scharrer (Abbigail), her great-grandchildren, Abbie, Ellery, Margot, Loxley and Larkin; step-children, Tony Caruthers (Karen), Mike Caruthers, Tina Gray and Teasha Watts (Danny), extended members of the Caruthers family, and her siblings, Carolyn Smith (Jerry), Mike Bir, Steve Bir (Dora) and Jan Koren.

Marilyn always enjoyed playing cards and board games, often emerging victorious with her characteristic competitive spirit. Golfing and bowling brought her much joy in her younger years, as did time spent at the lake, surrounded by water and the laughter of loved ones.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) with her funeral service taking place at 1:00 p.m. She will be laid to rest privately at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park.
