Margaret Bernice Elzy Shelby, was born on May 13, 1933 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Nathan and Estelle Elzy. She departed this life on March 10, 2017.
Bernice (as she was affectionately known by most) accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age at Beargrass Baptist Church. She loved the Lord and attending church. It was important to her to attend church. She made sure that her children also knew the Lord and had a relationship with him.
She was educated in the Louisville Public School System and graduated from Central High School, class of 1951 1/2. She received a business degree in 1953. She worked for the Jefferson County Public School System as a Teacher's Assistant where she retired in 2001.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her siblings, Alyce Johnson, Nathan Elzy, Jr., Charles Elzy, William Elzy, Lenert Elzy, Sr., Maurice Elzy.
Bernice leaves to cherish her memories; a brother, Harold E. Elzy Sr. (Roberta); her children whom she loved dearly, James E. Shelby, Jr., Renee A. Shelby, Sheila I. Wright (David Sr.), Cheryl Butler (Theodore), Linda D. Haak (Jeffrey), Nathaniel W. "Billy" Shelby (Marcy) and Andre T. Shelby; 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and a host of other family members and friends.
We are blessed to have been loved by Bernice. We will smile with the memories she leaves us. She will truly be missed.
