Marcella Davis

December 3, 1929 — April 7, 2017

Marcella Davis, 87 of Louisville, KY, went Home to be with her Heavenly Father on April, 7, 2017. She accepted Christ at the young age of 15 at New Hope Baptist Church. She was a faithful member of Oakland Baptist Church since 1960, where she joined the rest of her family. Marcella served in several capacities within her church home as President of the Choir, Inter-Denominational Union of Choirs, where she served on the program committee, usher board, 1st President of Deacon's Wives of Kentucky, Mother Board and supervisor of Youth-in-Action as part of the Midwest Youth Conference.

She was a graduate of Central High School and then graduated from the Red Cross School of Practical Nursing. Marcella became a Licensed Practical Nurse and worked as a surgical nurse at St. Joseph Infirmary for over 27 years. She attended Jefferson Community College and Simmons Bible College. She received a Distinguished Citizen and Honorary Captain of the Belle of Louisville awards from Mayor Harvey I. Sloane and was also the 1st resident to serve on the board for Christian Care Community. Marcella collected over 18,000 pairs of shoes that helped to fund the WaterStep program which provides access to safe drinking water all over the world. She was a 20 year cancer survivor. Marcella was the treasurer for Spiritual Outreach United in Love (S.O.U.L), participated and volunteered for the Kentucky African Americans Against Cancer (KAAAC) were she supported, encouraged and inspired others to never lose hope against the battle of cancer.

Marcella was a faithful and dedicated band mother for her sons at Shawnee High School and Louisville Male High School. Marcella's interests were bowling with the Primetimers, traveling, reading, and she was an amazing seamstress.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years Dorsey Birkshell Davis and her parents, Frank McGinnis and Ida Mae Smith and brothers, Frank McGinnis, Jr. and Jesse McGinnis.

Marcella is survived by her loving sons, Jerome (Sonja) Davis and Michael "Spike" (Tanya) Davis; step-son, Ronald Lee (Carolyn) Davis, 9 grandchildren; sister, Lula Mae Johnson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be Saturday April 15, 2017, from 10am-1pm at Oakland Baptist Church, 1226 Algonquin Pkwy, Louisville, KY 40208, with a celebration of Marcella's life beginning at 1pm.

Entombment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, 4623 Preston Hwy, Louisville, KY 40213.

"I am writing my testimony, because God is able to sustain us through anything, I have witnessed others who have overcome their fears. I hope that those who read this will be able to focus on God and not their fears. May these few words of love and faith help your fight with cancer and keep your faith in God. Stay encouraged."
