Magdalene Merritt

Merritt, Electia Magdalene "Maggie" Russell, 89, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at her residence.

Magdalene was born on June 9, 1925 in Liberty, Kentucky to Herman and Malissa Taylor Russell. She was a member of Southeast Christian Church. She was active in the Act's II Bible Study, Classic Worship and Rebecca Ladies Fellowship. She taught school for 38 years in Casey, Lincoln, Fayette and Jefferson County at Okolona, Filson, Hawthorne and Fern Creek Elementary. After her retirement from JCPS, she taught at Southeast Christian Preschool for 9 years.

Magdalene is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dayton Merritt, her daughter Susan Merritt, sister-in-law Mary K. Russell, nephew Robert "Bob" Duncan, niece Ann Rumpel, great-niece Alison Schroeder; as well as two special girls who lovingly called her "Me-um", Claire and Jillian Norton and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and sister-in-law, Willard and Virginia Scott Russell, sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and George Duncan and brother, James Virgil Russell and baby brother Winfred Russell.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, KY from 4-7 pm and Thursday, June 4 from 10-11 at Southeast Christian Church in the Fireside Room. Funeral Services will be Thursday, June 4th at 11:00 in the Chapel at Southeast Christian Church. Entombment will be at Resthaven Memorial Park. Memorial Contributions can be made to Southeast Christian Church Missions, Make A Wish Foundation, or National Pancreas Foundation.
