Lula Mae "Poochie" Wesley was born September 17, 1939 to Harrison Elzy and Virginia Elzy in Berrytown, Kentucky (The Guin Home). She became a member of first Baptist Church in Anchorage Kentucky. Early on she attended Forest Grade School here in Berrytown and she continued her studies at Lincoln Institute High School Shelbyville. Lula was given the opportunity to live with Tish and Harvey Guin where she attended Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama
Lula met a young military veteran named Eugene Wesley, Jr. at Talladega University (Alabama). They both decided to move to California and eventually joined in Holy Matrimony. They were blessed with two children, Robin Basil Wesley and Michael Steven Wesley.
Lula began to work in her career with the Los Angeles County Unified School District at John Muir Junior High School. Once she completed her internship there, she transferred to the Compton Unified School District and taught home economics in the teen mother program. She had a passion for working with teenagers in the teen mother program teaching them sewing, cooking, budgeting and she also worked with the 1984 Olympics as a supervising staff.
After her divorce from Eugene Wesley Jr., Lula joined Trinity Baptist Church of Los Angeles, where she was very active with the fellowship and volunteered teaching Sunday School. She began working a second job, which was selling encyclopedias. Upon the return of her youngest son Michael Wesley from college the family decided to open a small bicycle and skateboard shop. Lula was very supportive of the family business and the inner-city sports teams.
Lula returned home to Berrytown to assist in caring for her mother, Virginia Elzy until her passing. She was always dedicated to family and friends. She eventually returned to Los Angeles to live out the rest of her life.
Lula was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison and Virginia Elzy. Lula is survived by sons, Robin Basil Wesley (Lillian La Joyce Pounds Wesley) and Michael Steven Wesley (wife Jennifer Falletti Wesley); her grandchildren, Diyana Hickman, Niles Wesley, Jack Duncan and Ruby Wesley; two great grandchildren, Imani and Quincey Hickman; her sister, Angelyn Clay; her aunts, Neanie Bald and Lula McCoy; and a host of family and friends
Visitation will be held at 10 A.M. on Tuesday, October 14th, 2025, at First Baptist Church 11500 La Grange Rd. Louisville KY 40223, with a celebration of Poochie's life to follow at 11 A.M. Burial will be at the Berrytown Cemetery immediately following the funeral Ceremony.
