Listen to Obituary
Lourinda (Lindy) Loie Estep passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at age 94.

Lindy was born to Howard Davis Ege and Bernice Loie Ege, in Turtle Creek, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 8, 1923.

Howard Ege worked in Pittsburgh as an engineer for Westinghouse. Just after Lindy's graduation from Forest Hills High School in 1941, the family moved to Louisville, and that fall she enrolled as a freshman at Georgetown College in Georgetown, KY. The next year, she transferred to the University of Louisville, where she met and became engaged to John Monroe Estep.

After John joined the Marines, and was sent to Laguna Beach, CA, for pilot training, Lindy took the train out to meet him in California, where they were married on January 24, 1943. They lived there for six months before John was sent to Guam as a pilot in WWII. Lindy then returned to Louisville, continued her studies at U of L, and took a job as a chemist at Tube Turns for one year.

After the war, John joined Lindy in Louisville, and she earned her Bachelor of Science degree from U of L in 1946. After they started their family, Lindy returned to school, and earned a Masters in Education, specializing in math, from Indiana University. She taught in Jefferson County Public Schools for 17 years as a 7th grade math teacher, at Woerner Junior High and later at Noe Middle School.

Lindy was an active member of the Strathmoor Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School and led circle activities. She also engaged in political activism, such as marching to protest busing in Louisville in 1974.

At age 65, Lindy donated her kidney to her daughter Kim, and later, she attended many transplant games.

In 1983, Lindy and John moved to the beach in Wilmington, NC, where they enjoyed their retirement for nearly 20 years. Lindy took many trips around the world - some with John, and some with her brother Davis - where she enjoyed meeting people and sharing cultural exchanges. One of the highlights was meeting Nelson Mandela with her brother in South Africa. While in Wilmington, Lindy served as a docent for Latimer House and attended First Presbyterian.

John passed away on August 3, 2001. In 2002, Lindy returned to Louisville, where she joined the Anchorage Presbyterian Church, and maintained an active social life with her Lunch Bunch, Book Club, and other friends.

Lindy was also predeceased by her younger brothers, Howard Davis Ege, Jr., Thornton Ege, and an infant son, Michael Lloyd Estep.

She is survived by 4 children: Janet Lynn Egerton (Phillip Egerton), Marshall Davis Estep (Maria Boosalis), Sandra Elizabeth Estep (Gregory Dutch), and Kim Monroe Lampley (Ray Lampley); 7 grandchildren: David Egerton (Valerie Harman), Diane Lourinda Golden (Bryce Golden), Joann Rae Gonzalez (Vinnie) Gonzalez), David Ray Lampley, Rachel Simone Dutch, Theodore John Estep, and Alexandra Maria Nicole Estep; and 4 great-grandchildren: Avery William Egerton, Sylvia Jane Egerton, Anthony Lampley, and Esther Rose Golden.

Visitation, memorial service, and reception will be held at Anchorage Presbyterian Church(11403 Park Rd, Anchorage, KY 40223) on Oct 7th at 10:00 am.

Lindy loved her family and particularly large gatherings for holidays, weddings, and special events. She also loved nature, history, and politics. Her friends were important to her and she loved her time at Dorsey Hills and Brownsboro Park. In her last months she was embraced by the nurses and staff at Brookdale. The family is very grateful to all who cared for her.
