Listen to Obituary

Ruth Chaffins, known lovingly by her family and friends as Ruth, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky, the city in which she was both born and raised. Ruth was born Leslie Ruth Tomerlin on January 12, 1940, in Louisville, Kentucky. Her passing marks the end of a long and gracious life marked by service, devotion to her loved ones, and a positive impact on all who knew her.

Ruth attended and graduated from Manual High School, laying the foundation for a life guided by dedication and a love of learning. Her career was distinguished by extraordinary longevity and commitment; for 52 years, Ruth worked as an administrative assistant at Highland Presbyterian Church. Through her steady presence and tireless efforts, she contributed immeasurably to countless lives, becoming a cherished part of the church’s community and collective memory.

A caring and nurturing spirit, Ruth’s love for her family was apparent in all she did. She is survived by her sons, Tristan Chaffins and Shandy Chaffins; her granddaughter, Sierra Hoffman; her grandson, Shane Chaffins; her devoted sister, Dorene Stopher; and numerous nieces and nephews. These loved ones remain grateful for Ruth’s unwavering support and deep affection.

Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gordon Chaffins; her father, Escue Tomerlin; her mother, Geneva Tomerlin; her brothers, David and Pete Tomerlin; and her sister, Juanita Skipper. Their memories endure as a source of comfort to those she leaves behind, and Ruth’s legacy joins theirs in the hearts of her family.

Service to others was a guiding principle in Ruth’s life. She grew up learning valuable life lessons at Cabbage Patch and continued to give back to that community as a volunteer throughout her life.

Outside her professional and charitable endeavors, Ruth was an avid reader and a gifted knitter. Her passion for knitting extended far beyond a hobby; she generously donated her handiwork to organizations such as Hosparus and Knitted Knockers, reflecting her compassion and desire to help those in need.

She also found great joy in traveling, especially in the company of her nieces, Bonnie and Vickie. These adventures further enriched a life already filled with meaningful connections and warm memories.

Ruth is remembered most for her sweet personality and kindness. She forged friendships wherever she went, and those who knew her quickly came to appreciate her gentle nature and heartfelt warmth. Ruth’s love extended to her four-legged companions as well, as she held a special affection for dogs.
