Leroy J. Terwillegar, born April 13, 1932, in Midland, Michigan, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2026, in New Albany, Indiana. His 94 years saw a rich tapestry of family, friendships, and a zest for life that touched all who knew him.
Son of the late Willis and Katie Terwillegar, Leroy grew up surrounded by the warmth and camaraderie of a close-knit family. He shared a special bond with his late siblings, Otis Terwillegar, Clara Miller, and Frances Shetler, memories of whom he held close throughout his life. His brother, Raymond Terwillegar, survives him and continues to honor the ties of family that meant so much to Leroy.
He grew up on his family farm and started his own farm as well. Later he started his own restaurant business and loved the interaction with all of his customers.
Leroy’s greatest legacy is the family he so deeply cherished. He is survived by his beloved daughters, Rosemary (Dennis) Pursell and Luann (Rick) Marcotte, and his step-daughter, Beverly (Jesse) Bewley. He was a grandfather to Patrick (Heather), Lisa, Amy, Aaron, Tracey (Josh), James, Dakota (Kellie), Jessica (Zane), Jacob, each of whom brought joy and pride into his life. Leroy had the pleasure of watching his family grow, welcoming great-grandchildren Kaman, Chloe, Emily (Bryan), Ashley (Jeremy), Chris (Madalynn), Everest, Iydeus, Nathan (Sammantha), Chase, Trace (Kayla), Jesse, Shane, Hadley, and Noah and great-great grandchildren Jayce, Cole, and Gavin into the world. He also leaves behind brother, Raymond Terwillegar, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends who became like family over the years.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Katie Terwillegar, Brother, Otis Terwillegar, Sister, Clara Miller, Sister, Frances Shetler, step son, Mark Dodge.
A man of many passions, Leroy found happiness in the simple pleasures of life: golfing, fishing, and hunting were among his most treasured pastimes. An avid outdoorsman, his affinity for nature was matched by his keen interest in following the stock market. Leroy was also a dedicated fan of NASCAR and horse racing, finding excitement and camaraderie among fellow enthusiasts. Above all else, Leroy loved people-he never missed an opportunity to socialize, share a story, and make a connection. His friendly spirit and genuine curiosity made him a friend to many.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Leroy will remember his kindness, his welcoming nature, and the laughter he brought into their lives. His love for life and for those around him remains an inspiration.
A Celebration of Life in honor of Leroy J. Terwillegar will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southern Indiana, located at 3309 Ballard Ln, New Albany, IN 47150. Friends and family are invited to gather, remember, and pay their respects to a life well-lived.
Leroy’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him, through the stories told, the lessons imparted, and the legacy of love and friendship he leaves behind.
