Leola Doloris Gabaree, a beloved matriarch and dedicated community member, passed away on June 7, 2025, at the age of 95 in Corydon, Indiana. Born on July 19, 1929, in Louisville, Kentucky, she lived a life rich with service, family, and kindness.
Leola's career was marked by her unwavering commitment to her community and her ability to inspire those around her. She worked diligently for the Civil Air Patrol, and she also trained cadets at Camp Atterbury. Her contributions extended to the New Albany Crime Watch, where she played a vital role in enhancing the safety and well-being of her neighborhood. Moreover, Leola served as the Secretary at the New Albany Housing Authority and worked as a receptionist at Smith Furniture in New Albany, showcasing her strong work ethic and dedication to her roles.
Outside her professional life, Leola had a warm and engaging personality; she was known to "never meet a stranger" and was always willing to lend a helping hand to others. Her commitment to volunteerism shone brightly through her service with organizations such as the Salvation Army, Goodwill, and various food drives. She took great pride in fighting for her community and helping those in need.
Leola enjoyed a range of hobbies, from playing softball and basketball to her love for music, especially the tunes of Elvis. She delighted in singing, watching old movies, and cherished her coffee time, particularly at Starbucks. However, her most treasured moments were those spent with family, creating lasting memories with her loved ones.
Leola is survived by her devoted children: Leola "Dale" Bozian, Alma Faye (Jason) Boldizsar, Freole P. (Theresa) Gabaree, Jr., Brenda S. Gabaree, Linda L. (Larry) Franzell, Sheila R. (Brett) Gatrost, Edward W. (Sue) Gabaree, Delia A. (Doug) Ott, Theresa M. Dailey, and Matthew J. (Karen) Gabaree. Additionally, she leaves behind a legacy of love embodied in her 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Leo Edward and Lena Keiss, her grandchild Shawn L. Gabaree, her beloved brother Charles Streetman, and her son-in-law Bruce S. Bozian. Each of these individuals held a special place in her heart and will be remembered fondly in her absence.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 16, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, both at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southern Indiana, located at 3309 Ballard Ln, New Albany, IN. A funeral service will follow on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the same location. Burial will follow at Central Barren Cemetery.
Leola Doloris Gabaree will be deeply missed, but her spirit of generosity, compassion, and love will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
