Kay Ann (Aleson) Chew, passed away on Friday, October 18, 2024, at the age of 79. Kay's life was one marked by devotion to her family, her faith, and her community. Retiring from West Clark School Corporation, she dedicated more than 20 years to nurturing young minds in the classroom. Her influence extended beyond the classroom as she was a devout Catholic and an active parishioner at St. Francis Xavier in Henryville and St. John the Baptist in Starlight. Kay also generously volunteered her time with the New Albany Deanery Catholic Youth Ministry, demonstrating her commitment to the youth in our community.


Born on February 4, 1945, in Huron, South Dakota, she was the beloved daughter of Norval and Marian (Gresbrink) Aleson. Kay was preceded in death by her loving husband, Don Chew, as well as her siblings, Betty and Bob, and her sisters-in-law, Carol and Karen.


Kay is survived by her children, Kari Czachor (Brad), Scott Slavik, and Michael Chew (Janelle). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Ashton Slavik (Tyler), Bryce Slavik (Tori), Lindsey Sneed (Garrett), Ryan Chew (Kelsi), Allison Chew, Brooke Schmelz (Joseph), Elaine Slavik (Garrett), Eric Chew, Jaedon Slavik, and Kendal Slavik. Kay took immense pride in teaching her grandchildren how to read, instilling in them a love for learning that will undoubtedly endure. Additionally, she is survived by ten great-grandchildren, brothers Jim, David (Susan), Doug (Carol) Aleson, sister Barb Shakal (Carl), and many generations of nieces and nephews.


Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 25, 2024, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). Visitation will continue on Saturday after 9:00 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church (101 North Ferguson, Henryville), where her funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. 


Contributions in Kay’s memory may be made to Catalyst Catholic Youth Ministry (101 St. Anthony Drive, Mt. St. Francis, IN 47146).
