Joseph Spencer Gilkey II, 67, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana was called home on Sunday, June 21, 2015. He was born on October 19, 1947 in New Albany, Indiana to Joseph S. Gilkey Sr. and Anna Catherine (Bischof) Gilkey. Joseph was a retired school teacher of 25 years at Georgetown Elementary where he coached the girls' volleyball team. He also worked for 10 years for Jefferson County Kentucky PVA. Joseph was a member of St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church, a Colonel in the Civil Air Patrol where he once served as Indiana Wing Commander, an avid amateur radio operator - N9ME - where he talked to people all over the world, and he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Dorothy M.(Schmelz) Gilkey; children: Paul A. Gilkey (Victoria), Karen M. McCartney (Jake), Pamela J. Slatten (John); siblings: John L. Gilkey (Virginia), Anna Marie Henson (Charles), Barbara K. Peper (David), William V. Gilkey (Sherrye); and 14 grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 from 1 to 8 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, Indiana 47150). His Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 10 AM at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church (5719 St. Mary Road, Floyds Knobs, Indiana 47119).
In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the charity of donor's choice.
