Joseph Robert Flaherty, Sr. | Louisville KY

March 15, 1943 — October 14, 2025

Joseph Robert Flaherty, Sr., a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, in Louisville, Kentucky, with loving family members by his side. He was born on March 15, 1943, in Rhodelia, Kentucky, and lived in Louisville and Mt. Washington most of his life.

A proud graduate of Flaget High School, Joseph dedicated 37 years of his career to General Electric, in many capacities. He also worked at Flaherty’s III and The Essex House, with family members, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was known for his disciplined work ethic and later became an avid traveler, visiting many countries around the world, including his beloved Ireland.

Joseph was a man of many interests and hobbies, and he found great joy in music, travel, genealogy, history, and in his love for nice cars. He was from a very musical family and, in particular, he loved Elvis, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and The Beatles, and he could tell you endless facts about them (and many other things). He also sang and played the guitar and bass, passing that love of music along to his own family. He was also a very passionate patriot. He loved sharing stories about music, our family history and his world travels, amongst many other topics, and he greatly enjoyed spending time with his family.

Joseph was married to Dorothy Flaherty for many years, and they had the opportunity to share countless loving times together, whether traveling or at home. He was formerly married to Lois Redmon, with whom he had four children and many grand and great-grandchildren, all of whom he cherished deeply. He leaves behind his four children: Joseph Robert Flaherty, Jr. (Kim); Sandra Kay Downey (John); Dee Jae Diliberto; and Thomas Frederick Flaherty (Jo ann). His grandchildren included: Denise Flora (Ian); Krystal Flaherty; Jordan Crawford; Michael Crawford; Jacob Crawford; Chase Diliberto; Paige Diliberto; Cassie Miller (Art); and Jenna Thurman (Tyler). His great-grandchildren included: Charlie Flora; Kaden Flaherty; Heath Thurman; and Arthur Miller. To his family, he was more than a father, grandfather, or great-grandfather, he was their biggest supporter and was a guiding light in their lives.

Joseph is survived by his brothers: John Flaherty; Rick Flaherty; and Ron Flaherty. Preceding him in death were his father, John Flaherty, his mother, Zilpha Flaherty and his brother, Danny Flaherty, who were greeted warmly upon his arrival at peace. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him and were touched by his generous spirit.

At his request, the family will hold a small Celebration Of Life, with immediate and close family members, on Friday, October 17, 2025.

As we remember Joseph Flaherty, let us celebrate the laughter, love, music and countless memories he gifted to us. Though he has left this world, his spirit will remain an everlasting presence in the hearts of those who loved him deeply.
