John H. Wilcox

June 25, 1939 — January 5, 2021

John H. Wilcox, 81, died January 5, 2021. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Lynda Roppel Wilcox; and his beloved son, John Cletus Wilcox. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and a legion of friends. He was predeceased by his parents, F. Shirley and Grace C. Wilcox; and his brother, Frank S. Wilcox.

John was a graduate of New Albany High School and Ball State University. John was involved in Democrat politics his entire life, including Floyd County Young Democrats, Democrat Men's Club, and local coordinator for the Bobby Kennedy and the Barack Obama campaigns. He also served as Floyd County Democrat Chair for several years.

His long career included teaching history at Nathaniel Scribner Junior High School in New Albany, working as Administrative Assistant to New Albany Mayor Warren Nash, serving as committee staffer for U.S. Senator Vance Hartke in Washington, D.C., and providing long-term service to the Department of Public Works and Economic Development for the City of Louisville, Kentucky.

John was a charming gentleman with great humor and was a lover of music, particularly bluegrass and folk, never missing a Bill Monroe Festival at Beanblossom, Indiana.

Cremation was chosen following John's wishes, and a Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions was entrusted with his care.
