John Rogers White, 71, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2019. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War in the United States Army. During his time in the service, John became a sharpshooter and earned the Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. John was an active member of Greater Mount Zion Apostolic Church where he served as a deacon, participated in the choir, and was instrumental in the upkeep of the church.
He was born on November 27, 1947, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late Charlie and Lucy (Jones) White. John was also preceded in death by his brother, Carl White.
John is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Peggy (Smith) White; son, David Smith (Courtney); daughters, Detra Smith and Donna Spencer (Derrick); siblings, Charles White (Betty), Charlotte James (James), Deloris Evans, Lenora Taylor, Andrew White, Stephen White, Carl Fugate (Denise), and Tammy Fugate; grandchildren, Aaron, David, Jr., Michael, Derrick, Jr., Danica, Dylan, and Devynne; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2019, at Greater Mount Zion Apostolic Church (3845 Wayne Street, New Albany) with his funeral service taking place at 1:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will follow at West Haven Cemetery in New Albany.
