John Robert Sears, age 71 of Cox's Creek, Kentucky passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2015. He was a former teacher and coach with Jefferson County Public Schools. [John excelled at cross-country and track at Somerset High School and later at Western KY University. In 2010 he was inducted into the Somerset High School Hall of Fame for his running. At Western he held the Ohio Valley Conference mile record for many years. As a coach in the Jefferson County Public School System, he coached a number of track & field and cross-country state champions.] John was an avid outdoorsman and marksman. He was a mentor to his grandson who achieved Martial Arts Full-Contact Fighter of the Year for 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Seldon Sears, Sr. and Thelma Wright Sears Brown; his siblings, Carol Richey, Sue Newkirk and Harold Sears.
John is survived by his loving children, William T. Sears, Libby Sears Blair and John M. Sears (Denise); grandchildren, Aaron Bradley Sears (Kayla), Gareth Ian Sears, Bethany Grace Blair and Allie Kate Blair; his siblings, Beverly Randall (Cliff), Sherri Ritchie (Jack), Marcella Hill (John), Edward Sears (Rebecca) and Darwin Newkirk; many nieces, nephews and a host of human and animal friends.
Visitation will be 1-5pm Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 235 Juneau Drive in Middletown, with funeral ceremony to follow at 5pm.
