John Phillip Gutermuth, Jr.

John Phillip Gutermuth, Jr, 68, of Louisville, Kentucky passed away on Thursday May 11, 2017. He retired from Kentucky Farm Bureau in 2011, and was active in his community as a musician and music instructor. He was a member of Top Brass Quintet and Rascals of Ragtyme bands.
John earned a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from University of Louisville, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He served as drum major of the UofL marching band for two years. He then received his MBA from Indiana Wesleyan. John worked in retailing immediately after graduation and shifted his career to insurance adjustor, first for State Farm and later for Kentucky Farm Bureau where he retired as a District Claims Manager in 2011.
His passion, always, was his music. He was a versatile tuba player and frequently played with The Rascals of Ragtyme and The Top Brass Quintet. He spent many years playing in the orchestra of Walnut Street Baptist Church and more recently, Westport Road Baptist Church. Over the years, John gave private lessons and shaped the lives of many young musicians, always encouraging them and challenging them to be better. Happily, retirement gave him an opportunity to work one day a week with the low brass at Oldham County Middle School; "Mr. G" as he was known, won the hearts of his students.
John was born on August 11, 1948, Louisville, Kentucky to the late Emma (Flynn) and John Gutermuth, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Donna Boyd.
John is survived by his Wife of 47 years, Martha (Scherer) Gutermuth; 2 children, John Phillip Gutermuth III and Heather Michelle Niehoff (Gutermuth); grandson, Julian Thomas Gutermuth; and daughter in-law, Leigh Ann Gutermuth.
Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Monday, May 15, 2017 at Newcomer Funeral Home (235 Juneau Drive, Louisville). His Memorial Service will be held Monday at 4:00 pm immediately following visitation.
