It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Allen Gortney Jr., aged 66, who left us peacefully on Sunday, March 1, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky.
John was a remarkable man, cherished as a loving partner, devoted father, beloved son, proud grandfather, and loyal friend. His service as a U.S. Army veteran, where he dedicated his time as a military policeman, exemplified his commitment to his country and his steadfast dedication to duty. A true jack of all trades, John was rarely seen sitting still; he embraced life with hard work and tireless energy.
A passionate wrestling fan, John found joy in the simple pleasure of watching his grandchildren’s ball games, never missing an opportunity to cheer them on. His love for tinkering with cars was a testament to his hands-on spirit, while his gift for storytelling endeared him to many, ensuring that his tales and laughter will linger in the hearts of those who knew him.
Born on August 31, 1959, in Louisville, Kentucky, to John and Joann Gortney, he is now reunited with his beloved mother, Joann, and father, John Gortney Sr., as well as his brother, William "Billy" Gortney.
John leaves behind his significant other, Carey Oldson, along with his children: Stacy Hooten, John (Kathy) Gortney III, Brittney Albee, and Justin (Christin) Gortney. His legacy will continue to flourish through his grandchildren: Devin (Lindsey), Nicholas, Leland (Haleigh), Phoenix, Kennedi, Kaine, Kori, Karli, Hannah, Aiden, Alexandria, Natalie, and Landon, as well as four great-grandchildren. John will also be lovingly remembered by extended family and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
A visitation will be held in his honor on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the funeral service commencing at 6:00 p.m. at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Southwest Louisville Chapel.
We invite all who knew John to share their treasured memories and leave heartfelt messages for his family, as we come together to celebrate a life filled with love, laughter, and lasting impact.
