John Leo Geswein, age 83, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2025, peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in New Albany, Indiana on September 11, 1942 to the late Elmer and Mildred (Salesman) Geswein. He graduated from Our Lady of Providence High School in 1960, served in the U.S. Army as a communications technician and military policeman, and returned to New Albany to begin a forty-year career with the former Indiana Bell. His work there began by installing copper wires in people's homes for black rotary-dial telephones and continued through testing fiber-optic cables laid under the Ohio River. For several years, he served as secretary-treasurer of his union local. During this career, he also pursued his other interests: working at a garden center to advance his knowledge of gardening and landscaping, working as a general contractor to build homes with and for his family, and playing the games he loved. Since he was always "the tall guy", he played first base for the company softball team, and he shared the family passion for horseshoes and euchre. Upon his retirement from these careers, the games turned more to cornhole, and the vocations became spending another twenty years and more helping and enjoying his family. From parents and in-laws through great-grandchildren, everyone always appreciated Pappaw John's help.
Besides his parents and parents-in-law, he was preceded in death by his younger brother, Carl; and his beloved daughter, Joni, his "Tootsie". John was a devoted member of St. Michael Catholic Church.
John is survived by his loving wife of over sixty years, Rosemary (Maeser) Geswein; his brothers, Allen (Fran) Geswein and Jim (Charlotte) Geswein; his sons, Steve (Judy) Geswein and Tim (Shemilly) Geswein; his grandchildren, Vincent Fuller, Nathan (Alyssa) Fuller, Max Geswein, Mason and Cooper Geswein; and his great-grandchildren, Bradley, Madelyn, and Nora Fuller; and many nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, November 13, 2025 at St. Michael Catholic Church, 3705 Stone Lakes Dr, Louisville, KY 40299. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with the funeral Mass immediately following at 11:30 a.m.
