The cornerstone of our family, JoAnn (Wilton) Dome, 84, of Clarksville, Indiana passed away on Saturday evening, January 30, 2016. A 1952 graduate of Norton Memorial Infirmary School of Nursing (Louisville, KY), she served in the field of health care for over 40 years including several years as a registered nurse at Clark Memorial and Floyd Memorial Hospitals. For the last 15 years of her career, she prospered as the Executive Director of VNA of Southeastern Indiana.
A life-long advocate of children and adults with special needs, JoAnn tirelessly lobbied for the placement of Special Education in the public schools of southern Indiana. She participated in many charitable organizations, served on the New Hope Board of Directors, was an active member of the Indiana Historical Society, and a life-time supporter of Special Olympics of Southern Indiana. In 1997, she was honored with the distinguished Norah J. McFarland Award from the Indiana Association of Home-care and Hospice for outstanding leadership and expertise in the field of Home Health Care. She was also named Clark County Volunteer of the Year.
One of the strongest people to walk this earth, JoAnn was a three-time cancer survivor (breast and lung). A Methodist by faith, she had the amazing ability to spread love and joy to everyone who knew her.
She was born on October 31, 1931 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Paul and Virginia (Leach) Wilton. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Marcia Dome; and brother, Paul Wilton, M.D.
An amazing mother and grandmother, JoAnn is survived by her children, Julie Dome, John Dome (Deanna), Lucinda Senseman (Bryan), Jan Dome; grandchildren, Jason Dome (Kaile), Caleb Senseman, Katherine Senseman. She was a friend to many, but none as dear to her as Peggy Metzger (Jerry).
Cremation was chosen following JoAnn's wishes. She will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Corydon, Indiana. The family will hold a "Celebration of JoAnn's Life" on Sunday, February 28 in the upstairs portion of the New Albany Roadhouse (Old New Albany Country Club – 1706 Graybrook Ln, New Albany, IN 47150) from 2:00pm - 5:00pm.
Contributions in her memory may be made to New Hope Services, Inc. (1302 Wall Street, Jeffersonville, IN 47130) or to the Special Olympics of Southern Indiana (6200 Technology Center Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46278).
