Jean Ann Brooks (Hartmann), 82, passed away December 3, 2021 in Louisville Kentucky. She was born on February 13, 1939 in Louisville, Ky. She was the daughter of Adele and Walter Hartmann. She graduated from Eastern High School in 1957. It was here she met her husband, Gene Paul Brooks. In her hopechest, her daughters found a prom dance card that Gene had written his name in all the dance spots, so no one else could get a dance with her! The pair married on November 22, 1957 and started their life together.
Jean's life was defined by her creative ability. She enjoyed teaching adults and children her many arts. She was a member of the 4H club and won many awards for her sewing capacity. She made her own wedding dress, her daughter's prom and wedding dresses, and even helped the granddaughters with their special occasions. Her favorite things to sew were for the grandgirls. She smocked dresses, bonnets, and fancy coats for them. She could knit, crochet, and paint as well. She was an artist until the very end! Even when she couldn't sign her name, she painted a cute little happy blue bird that we cherish.
Mrs. Brooks was a seamstress and did alterations for wedding shops and individual clients. She was a member of Middletown Christian Church for 60+ years and helped serve people in many ways. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary on the Middletown Fire Department.
The Brooks' enjoyed camping and traveling in their Sunnybrook trailer. They were members of the Sunnybrook Camping Club. Happy memories of camping with them are shared throughout all the generations, especially the Halloween camping trip at Elkhorn.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Brooks, her father Walter Hartmann, her mother Adele Hartmann Mackison, and stepfather Herman Mackison.
She will be sorely missed by her brother Bill Hartmann, her children, Donnie Brooks (Jean), Sherri Brooks (Garry), Debbie Smith (Craig). She was a loving and caring grandmother (alias Grandma, Grammy, Gramcracker, Grammy Ann, and Grams) to Christopher Luckett (Kelley), Michelle Distler (Brandon), Kassie Adams (Jacob), Brooke Long (Cody), and Rachel Bernhardt. She would always "take up" for these grandkids no matter the offence. Great grandmother to Milo (her little peanut) and Bodhi Adams.
The family will receive friends on Monday, December 6, 2021 from 3 to 8 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals, and Receptions, East Louisville Chapel (235 Juneau Drive). A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 11 am at the funeral home with burial to follow at Cave Hill Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the staff at The Enclave of East Louisville for the wonderful care given to her.
