Jan Lynn (Speas) Veal, 56, of Louisville, claimed her victory in Christ, surrounded by family at Baptist Hospital East in the early hours of October 31, 2015, one week after a diagnosis of metastatic cancer.
She was born in Charleston, WV, on November 19, 1958, the first child of Robert "Bob" Louis and Jo Ann (Lowther) Speas, she was a life-long Louisville resident. She met and fell in love with her husband of 36 years, Dr. Bryan Jackson Veal, while participating in youth group at Trinity Baptist Church in Fern Creek, KY.
More than anything, Jan loved being a mother and an educator; two passions she combined as an early pioneer of the Louisville home education community. She was a life long learner, an eloquent writer, and a constant teacher. She showed an intentional love for those around her and her impact remains bright and lasting. To the end, she taught us about courage, faith, and unconditional love.
Jan is survived by her husband Bryan and three daughters, Sarah Disney (Paul), Emily Cantwell (Hunter), and Katelyn; one granddaughter, Charlotte Cantwell; her parents, Bob and Jo Ann; three sisters, Becky Murphy (Wendell), Mary Ann Halloway (Tony), and Jennifer Stoutt (Van); as well as many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephew, and many students she taught throughout the years.
Visitation will be 12-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at Newcomer Funeral Home (235 Juneau Drive Louisville, KY 40243) and Wednesday, November 4, 2015 after 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. in the Fireside Room at Southeast Christian Church, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. (920 Blankenbaker Parkway Louisville, KY 40243).
