James William Batson, age 48, of Louisville, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016. Jim was a physically active child. He loved skate boarding and soccer which he participated in with his brother, Michael. Michael being 2 years older than Jim was always his protector from bullies. When sixteen, Jim's first real job was working as a busboy in the dining hall of a convalescent hospital. The older folks quickly became attached to him as he shared personal interest in everyone.
Jim had to overcome obstacles such a learning disabilities growing up, but with determination and hard work, he graduated first from high school and then from Master's Institute, majoring in graphic art.
Along with his journey of life, Jim made many friends as he cultivated a gentle, kind spirit, showing empathy for others. He'd never hesitate to say a simple "I love you!"
When he was 29, he married Laura Bosolo. Laura had M.S., so they decided not to pursue raising a family. They both had a love for the adventures of Disney Cruises together and vacations at Disney World. They had a home together in Tracy, CA.
Jim took an interest in cycling and rode many times in support of M.S. for his wife. He found many friends in the cycling group, encouraging others to participate as well. He had a passion for this and loved the beauty of God's creation he saw, riding the California coast line, up mountains and across deserts.
It was about his time that he learned of the wonderful hope the Bible holds out, in a study with Jehovah Witnesses. His enthusiasm never diminished and he shared this with his family, workmates, cycling friends and wherever he found people.
Sadly, after a major seizure, Jim was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor in April 2013, had surgery which was followed by chemo and radiation treatments. This didn't stop him from pursuing his goal of baptism. He dedicated himself to serve his God, Jehovah and was baptized on July 20, 2013.
A few months later, he lost his job and was in jeopardy of losing his apartment. His mother and step-father suggested he come to Kentucky to continue to receive treatment and seek new employment.
Even while ill here in Kentucky, Jim continued to make friends and was greatly supported by his friends at his new job at Amazon and in two congregations; Fern Valley and Huntington Park.
Unfortunately his health became worse. Although he was suffering, he never failed to encourage others with the Bible's hope, especially while in the hospital or the therapy waiting room. Today, he would want to share that hope with you.
Jim is preceded in death by his father, Robert Batson; his aunt Nancy Batson; and his grandparents, William and Marjorie Batson, and John and Josephine Jordan.
Jim is survived by his loving mother, Carol Batson Osbrink (Paul); sisters, Beverly Batson Landreth and Susan Batson Garcia; and his brother, Michael Batson; also aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews as well as cousins; and a host of friends.
Visitation will be 1-4pm Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 235 Juneau Drive with service to follow at 4pm. A memorial service of Jim's life will be 1pm Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Kingdom Hall, 5301 Garden Green Way, Louisville, Ky. 40218.
