James Whalen, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the age of 92.
Born on February 26, 1933, in Lexington, Kentucky, to Ocie and Charles Whalen, James lived a life full of faith, family, friendship, and purpose. A proud Kentuckian, he was a successful businessman in the telecommunications industry for over 35 years and served faithfully as an elder in his church community.
Known for his warm personality and outgoing nature, James truly never met a stranger. His love for people was only matched by his passion for volunteering for PGA tournaments and golf in general - a game he enjoyed well into his later years. After Nancy’s passing, James found companionship and joy in a new friendship with Judy Martiny. Together, they spent time visiting ill friends and offering support and kindness to others—further reflecting James’s generous spirit. He was known in his retirement community for organizing spontaneous cookouts for anyone who stopped by for a chat and enjoyed the daily conversation during the “noon wave” .
James was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Nancy, whom he met when they were just eight years old. Their lifelong bond was a testament to enduring love and partnership. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Betty Smith.
James is survived by his three children, Jerry (Vicki), Victor (Cathy) and Celeste; his five grandchildren, Melissa, Michelle, Daniel , Michaela and Jacob; and his five great-grandchildren, Gwendoline, Tatum, Grace, Josephine and Clementine...all of whom were a source of immense pride and joy to him. He cherished his family deeply and always made time for stories, laughter, and encouragement.
Visitation will be from 10am to 12pm on Monday, July 28, 2025 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, East Louisville Chapel, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, Kentucky 40243. A celebration of Jim's life will be held there at 12pm, with burial to follow in Floydsburg Cemetery, Crestwood, Kentucky.
His family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful caregivers who brought him comfort, dignity, and companionship in his final years at Forest Springs and The Pinnacle of Louisville and the support of Hosparus.
James Whalen’s legacy of love, service, and connection lives on in all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. Thank you to all who have been a part of our dad’s life and for your prayers during his illness
