James Michael "Big Mike" Elkins, 59, passed away on September 11, 2016, at Jewish Hospital. He was born October 24, 1956, in Fort Knox, KY and was a 1975 graduate of Valley High School. Mike was an independent taxi driver, a profession he loved and was well suited for, because of his friendly and outgoing personality. He was genuinely interested in the people he met and could hold an interesting and intelligent conversation about any subject matter. Mike enjoyed cooking, reading science fiction, traveling and being outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, Michael Joseph, father, Norman Elkins and brother, Robert Elkins.
Mike is survived by his son, Daniel (Ruby) Thomas; granddaughters, Kyra and Karyna; mother, Mary Elkins; brothers, Ed (Veronica) and Brian Elkins; sisters, Norma (Jerry) Pierce, Jeane Noland and Debra Elkins and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday, September 16, 2016 from 1pm-8pm at Newcomer Funeral Home SW Chapel (10304 Dixie Highway). A celebration of Mike's life will be Saturday, September 17, 2016, beginning in 10am at the chapel of Newcomer Funeral Home SW.
