James McDonald "Donald" Thompson, a devoted family man, respected worker, and faithful member of his community, passed away on June 6, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky. Born on June 1, 1933, in Lebanon, Kentucky, Donald lived a life marked by steadfast dedication to his family, faith, and work.
Donald graduated from St. Charles High School in Raywick, KY, where he laid the foundation for a life committed to hard work and service. He proudly served his country as an Army veteran during the Korean War, exemplifying courage and commitment.
Following his military service, Donald devoted 28 years as an Industrial Mechanic at Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company. Afterwards, he continued his strong work ethic by working for the Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) as a truck driver and also took on the responsibility of snow removal during winter months. His reliability and diligence were noted by all who knew him.
A deeply religious man, Donald was faithful in his church attendance, embodying quiet strength and humility. His commitment extended beyond worship; he was active in his church community, enjoying playing baseball at church events, assisting with picnics at St. Polycarp, and serving as an Usher there. These roles reflected his dedication and willingness to serve others selflessly.
Donald’s love for the outdoors was evident in his hobbies and interests. He cherished gardening, rabbit hunting, and spending time with his brothers on their family cattle and tobacco farm in Raywick, KY. An avid walker, he found peace and purpose through these connections with nature and family land.
Among Donald's proudest accomplishments were the love and care he provided for his family and his unwavering work ethic. Growing up, he was instrumental in helping his parents and siblings on the family farm, always putting the needs of loved ones first.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martina Ann Thompson; parents, Alvin and Mildred Thompson; daughter, Karen Maureen Thompson Boston; son, Timothy Alan Thompson; siblings, Matthew Thompson, Aileen Spalding, Jerry Thompson and Ed Thompson;
Donald leaves behind to cherish his memories, children, Martha Dianne (Jerry) Lavelle, Judith Carol (Leo) Kaelin, Susan Marie (Eddie) Pile, Mary Patricia (John) Drees, James Christopher (Jeanne) Thompson and Kenneth Gary (Michelle) Thompson; daughter-in-law, Teri Thompson; grandchildren, Marie, Crystal, James, Bradley, Johnna, Amanda, Stephanie, Emily, Sean, Kristina, Lindsay, Mathew, Sophia, Carter, Chad, Steven and Raymond; great-grandchildren, Alex, Eva, Sara, Elizabeth, Joseph, Vaida, Colson, Channing, Cruz, Dakota, Natalie, Peyton, Noah, Scout, Ty and Jackson; and his siblings, Angela Meyerhoffer, Kathleen Smith and Edwin Thompson
Visitation to honor Donald’s life will be held on June 11, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Louisville, located at 10304 Dixie Highway, Louisville, KY 40272. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM the same day at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 5431 Johnsontown Road, Louisville, KY 40258. A graveside service will be held later at 12:30 PM on June 22, 2026, at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery, 2501 North Dixie Boulevard, Fort Knox, KY 40121.
