James Lee Kopp, age 71, was born on November 24, 1953, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, passed away at his home in New Albany, Indiana, on October 5, 2025.
James dedicated 31 years of his life as a maintenance track welder for Norfolk Southern Railroad, embodying a strong work ethic and commitment to his craft. A proud 1974 graduate of Jeffersonville High School, he was well-respected in his community and left a lasting impression on those who had the privilege of knowing him.
James was known for his warm and welcoming personality; he wouldn't meet a stranger and was always ready to lend a hand to those in need. His ability to live in the moment truly defined him, as he found joy in both simple pleasures and significant interactions. He cherished the time spent socializing with friends and family, creating memories that will be held close by those he loved.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, James had a passion for working on his hot rods and attending car shows, showcasing his artistic talents through painting and carving. He was also deeply involved in his community, serving as Secretary of the Coon Hunters Association and being a former member of the Tri-County Shrine Club in Clarksville, Indiana.
James is survived by his loving children, Kelly (Craig) Johnson and Jeremiah (Candice) Kopp. He leaves behind cherished grandchildren, Breena Kopp, Elijah Kopp, Westen Kopp, and Alana Johnson, as well as a great grandchild, Brantan. His mother, Gerldine Dauby, along with siblings, Barbara Ann Montgomery and Clayton A. Kopp, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins, also survive him, carrying forth his legacy.
James was preceded in death by his father, Forest George Kopp, and his paternal grandparents, Herman and Ruby Lynn Kopp.
Family and friends are invited to commemorate James’s life during the visitation on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service starting at 1:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southern Indiana, located at 3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, IN 47150. Burial will follow at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany, Indiana.
James Lee Kopp will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and the joyful spirit he brought to the lives of many. His enduring legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
