James "Jim" Powell, a dedicated family man and respected professional, passed away on April 21, 2026, in New Albany, Indiana, with his devoted wife at his side. Born on March 9, 1940, in Logansport, Indiana, Jim led a life marked by service, hard work, and loyalty.
Jim was a proud graduate of Logansport High School, where his formative years laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to honesty and straightforwardness. Demonstrating a profound sense of duty, he served honorably in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, a period that shaped his disciplined character and dedication to country.
Following his military service, Jim pursued a successful career at Kroger, where he worked diligently as a manager until his retirement. His colleagues and customers alike recognized him for his dependable nature and leadership.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim’s greatest pride came from his family. He was a loyal husband to his wife, Cherie Powell, and a devoted father and grandfather. His joy was found in watching his family grow, reflecting his deep commitment to those he loved. Jim enjoyed spending time with his family, watching sports—especially baseball—and tending to his yard, demonstrating his appreciation for life's simple pleasures.
Jim is survived by his wife, Cherie Powell; his sons Brad Powell and Greg (Mickel) Powell; step-sons Brian (Roxanne) DeSpain, Mark (Dena) DeSpain, Chris (Loretta) DeSpain, and Patrick DeSpain; as well as many loving family members and friends who will remember him fondly. He was preceded in death by his father, Lonnie Powell, and mother, Nellie Powell.
Those wishing to pay their respects may attend visitation on April 28, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southern Indiana, located at 3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, Indiana. A funeral service will follow on the same day at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home, burial to take place with honors, at Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
James "Jim" Powell's life was one of dedication—to his country, career, and most importantly, his family. He will be remembered as a hardworking, honest, and straightforward man whose legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests donations be made in his honor to Toys for Tots, or to Crusade for Children.
