James "Jim" M. Casteel, Sr. a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on July 3, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on October 24, 1933, in Etowah, Tennessee, Jim lived a life filled with joy, laughter, and devotion to his family and community.
Jim proudly served his country as an Army Veteran during the Korean War, a testament to his courage and commitment. After returning home, he embarked on a dedicated 42-year career as a boilermaker welder for the railroad, where his hard work and craftsmanship earned him the respect of his peers.
His personality was truly one of a kind; Jim was known for being easygoing, always wearing a warm smile and sharing jokes that brought laughter to those around him. He had an exceptional ability to light up a room and make everyone feel welcome and valued. Family was at the heart of everything Jim accomplished. He reveled in the simple pleasures of life spent with loved ones, from playing card games to nighttime bowling with his family during his younger years. Jim's memories created a tapestry of joy, including memorable camping trips at Dale Hallow Lake and peaceful days spent fishing.
Jim was an active member of the church community, having served as a Deacon and singing in the choir at Cloverleaf Baptist Church. More recently, he found a home at Hillsdale Baptist Church. Additionally, he was a proud member of the Suburban Masonic Lodge #740. His contributions to his community were clear in his dedication and the friendships he fostered.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Lilly Casteel, and their two sons, James M. Casteel, II and Donald Ray Casteel. He also mourned the loss of his parents, Neut and Vista Mae Casteel, and his seven siblings. Although they are no longer with him, their memories live on in the stories he shared and the love he held for them.
He is survived by his daughters, Barbara K. Bragg and Mary Holton, as well as his cherished grandchildren: Jeremy Casteel, Josh Casteel and his wife Crystal, Jessica Johnson and her husband Paul, Jennifer Lucas and her husband Michael, and Jordan Casteel. His legacy is further enriched by the love of seven great-grandchildren, who brought immeasurable joy to his life.
