James Arthur Humbert, Sr., 94, of Sellersburg, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2019. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force who proudly served his country during WWII. James graduated in 1942 from the Kentucky Military Institute and entered the Air Corps in March of 1943. He completed air crew training at Nellis Air Force Base and was assigned to the 398th Bomb Group equipped with B-17s.
His Crew Phase Training was completed at Ellsworth Air Base. Upon completion, his group was sent to the 8th Air Force, 1st Bomb Wing. James flew 35 missions with his group and returned to the U.S. for the B-29 program. At the end of the war, he was awaiting with a new crew for posting to Guam. James was discharged in September, 1945 and remained in the Air Force Reserve at Stout Field in Indianapolis. He completed Air Navigation Training at Maxwell Field and returned to active duty in 1948. James then served with the U.S. occupation forces in the Western area of Germany.
Some of his military awards and decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster and the French Legion of Honor. He also served two terms as AFA Chapter 410 President.
He was born on January 27, 1925 in Akron, Ohio to the late Harry and Bertha (Stone) Humbert. James was also preceded in death by his wife, Leigh (George) Humbert.
James is survived by his children, James Humbert II (Cindy), Debbie Sefcovic (Donnie); grandchildren, Nick Sefcovic (Monika), Leslie Brooks, Matt Sefcovic (Alex), J. Lance Humbert; great-grandchildren, Genevieve Brooks and Elora Sefcovic.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) with his funeral service taking place at 1:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will follow at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
