James F. Smith, 71, of New Albany passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2014. Jim served his country in the National Guard, was president of Erdmann Corporation, and was a long-time member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. With his brothers, he was a member of the Smith Tractor Pulling Team. Strong in his faith, Jim was a devoted family man. He was in charge of the Cursillo movement at Mount St. Francis and was very active in his parish community. Loved by his birth family, he was equally loved by his parish family.
Jim was born on October 28, 1942, in New Albany to the late Julius W. and Rosetta E. (Hess) Smith. He was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Krista Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Ann (Voll) Smith; children, Timothy Smith, Marcia "Marci" Smith (Angela Travis), Christopher Smith (Laura); brothers, Richard "Dick" (Linda), Julius A. "Juder" Smith (Jean), and Jerry Smith (Elaine); sisters, Phyllis Andres (Ron), Darlene Schy (Martin), Karen Thomas (Tim), and Denise Bomersbach (Brad); grandchildren, Nathan Smith, Megan Smith; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of whom will miss him greatly.
Visitation will be from 11 AM to 8 PM on Thursday, March 6 at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) and after 9 AM on Friday. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM Friday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with entombment to follow at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany.
