James "Jimmy" Edward Fabel, a dedicated family man and industrious spirit, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, in New Albany, Indiana, with his beloved wife of 60 years, Bonita, and their loving family by his side. He was born on January 16, 1944, in Louisville, Kentucky, the cherished son of Clyde and Lula Mae Fabel.
Jimmy was a proud graduate of Jeffersonville High School, whose life journey took him to a significant career with Bell + Howell, where he worked as a Field Engineer for 27 years. His keen interest in electronics and hands-on work led him to take joy in various projects at home, from painting baseboards to crafting in his Tuff Shed made into his workshop. Whether it was spending quality time playing his Wii or immersing himself in woodworking, Jimmy found happiness in the simple pleasures of life.
Beyond his career and hobbies, Jimmy was known for his unwavering devotion to his family. He was a loving father to his daughters, Tracy (John) Rhodes and Jamie (Todd) Dowell, and a compassionate grandfather who took immense pride in watching his grandchildren grow and thrive. He leaves behind a legacy of love that will forever resonate through his grandson Tyler (Markie) Rhodes, granddaughters Katie Rhodes and Rhiley (Christian) Pavey, and grandson Kobe Dowell, as well as his great-grandsons Jarad Rhodes, Jordy Rhodes, and soon to be, Oakley Pavey.
Jimmy was not only a family man but also a loyal brother and a true friend. He is survived by his sisters, Gladys Louise (Henry) Tarven and Barbara Lewis, and his sister-in-law, Libby Fabel. The warmth he brought into their lives will be deeply missed. He is preceded in death by his father Clyde, mother Lula Mae, and siblings Clyde, Kenny, Violet Byers, and Doris Crone.
In addition to his familial roles, Jimmy proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he earned several medals, including the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Sharpshooter Badge, and a National Defense Medal. His courage and commitment reflect the values he carried throughout his life.
Jimmy’s passing leaves a profound void, yet the memories of his dedication, kindness, and unwavering love will remain alive in the hearts of all who knew him. His visitation will be held on January 8, 2026, from 1 PM to 6 PM, followed by a funeral service at 6 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home in New Albany, Indiana, 3309 Ballard Lane, 47150. A graveside service with military honors, will take place on January 9, 2026, at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
