James C. Berry Sr., a cherished husband, devoted father, and loving grandfather, passed away peacefully in Jeffersonville, Indiana, on November 21, 2025, at the age of 89. His beloved wife, Mary E. Berry, and a devoted circle of family surrounded him, reflecting the warmth and love that filled his life.
Born on March 20, 1936, in Columbus, Georgia, Jim exemplified what it meant to live with purpose. His journey led him to graduate from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree, an accomplishment that would further pave the way for his impactful career. He worked diligently as an Air Traffic Controller, eventually working his way into management and finished his career as the Tower Chief for the FAA at Standiford Field in Louisville, where he was instrumental in the expansion of UPS at that location as it became an Airline.
A proud veteran, Jim served in the United States Air Force from March 1957 to March 1963. His commitment earned him not only a Good Conduct medal but also a Special-Order medal and an Army Airways Communication System Medal, marking his service with honor and dedication.
Jim was much more than his admirable career and military accolades; he was a man of profound intellect and spiritual depth. He was known to his family as Papa, a title he wore with pride, embodying the nurturing spirit of a devoted patriarch and was often referred to as the ‘Elder Berry’! Fiercely intelligent and introspective, he delved into the rich intersection of science and spirituality, engaging in lively discussions that became some of his family's favorite pastimes. He was also an individual possessed of remarkable taste—whether sharing BBQ recommendations based on geographic nuances or introducing others to the beauty of choral music, Jim left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Throughout his life, he was deeply involved in his passions, becoming a member of the Choral Club of Louisville and serving as the choir director at Unity of Louisville. His love for travel found expression in adventures spent in his motor home, exploring new places with his second wife, Judy Berry by his side. He was a student of the world's religions and philosophies, always eager to converse about politics and theology, often sharing well-thought-out insights upon request. His engaging personality made him a loved figure amongst family and friends, not to mention the awe inspired by his incredible head of hair.
Jim's greatest accomplishment was not found in his awards or career successes but in the legacy, he created—watching his family grow and thrive. He is lovingly remembered by his son, James C (Lisa G.) Berry, Jr.; his daughter, Jana Berry (David Scott) Auspland; and stepson, Rusty (Theresa Edwards) Kingsley. His grandsons, James C. Berry, III, Richard Grant Berry, Christian Scott Auspland, and John David Kingsley; granddaughters Bailey Rae (Jared) Auspland-Jones, Abigail Annette Berry, Tori (Michael) McCarty; as well as great-grandsons, Vincent James Berry, and Colton McCarty; brother, Richard Eugene (Terry) Berry; nephews, Richard Dodd (Amy) Berry, and Gregory Alan (Jennifer) Berry carry on his vibrant legacy. He maintained a special relationship with his second wife’s children, their families and extended family: David (Lisa) Clemons and their children Kristen (Ryan and children) Doster, and Brian Clemons; Kathy Sohaney and her daughter Stephanie (Cody and children) Bailey; Kelly Kingsley; and Evan (Paola) DeWeese.
James is preceded in death by his second wife Judy Lane Berry and parents, William Horace Berry and Abbie Gayle Berry, and will forever be honored through the love and memories he instilled in his family. The bonds he nurtured throughout his lifetime remain a testament to the unshakeable spirit and warmth of a truly remarkable man.
His light will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
