James L. Altmann, our beloved “Jim,”passed away into his eternal life on August 18, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born on September 17, 1943 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Ludwig Altmann and Veronica LaRose Altmann. He was the first member of his immediate family to obtain a high school education and, pursuing his thirst for knowledge, he went on to achieve Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Business and a Phd in Economics. He would use his education to inspire countless students towards the pursuit of their own educations through his nearly 30 year career as a respected Professor of Economics at Indiana University Southeast. He was also proud to serve as a Lieutenant Commander in the Intelligence Unit of the U.S. Navy.
Although he was grateful for his career accomplishments, he didn’t often speak of his achievements. Jim’s family and friends were always his greatest pride above all else; especially his soul-mate and wife, Sarah. In July 1981, he married Sarah, the love of his life, and they remained best friends and one heck of a dynamic duo for the next 43 years. In addition to being a devoted husband, our Jim was dearest "Daddy" to his daughter Maria (and Son-in-Law Jonathan), precious "Papa" to his granddaughter, Natalie, and faithful friend to those who reveled in his intellectual mind, adventurous spirit and knee slapping good humor.
He was a warrior with a gentle spirit; bravely fighting a battle over the last eight months that left his body unable to contain a soul so magnificent. At his passing, he was holding the hand of his wife, Sarah, while his daughter, Maria, hugged him. What a blessing to send him to his reward with just as much love as he always gave.
In addition to his wife, Sarah Altmann, Jim is survived by his daughter, Maria Joshi (Jonathan) and granddaughter, Natalie Joshi, as well as Sarah’s brothers and sisters, many nieces and nephews and a handful of dear old friends; all of whom cherished him. He will be remembered by those who loved him as a hero; for his service to his Country, his dedication to his students and, especially, his enduring unconditional love to his family.
