Idania "Idie" Torres was born in Havana, Cuba in 1962 and in 1967, sponsored by relatives already here, she, along with her mother, (Isabel Guerra), and two siblings, (Jose Torres and Caridad Garcia), travelled to the United States on the Freedom Flights. Idie and her siblings were raised in Miami, Florida and became avid beach lovers. Spending time near the beach was one of her favorite pastimes. Growing up during the 80's in Miami, Idie's other favorite passions included dancing and disco music. She loved Earth, Wind and Fire, KC and the Sunshine Band, Gloria Estefan, and 1000 others. She loved music and dancing all her life. She met her husband of 24 years, (Michael Corrigan, US Coast Guard veteran), at a picnic social she was invited to at the coast guard base in Homestead. A few years after the birth of their first child (me), the three of us relocated to Louisville, KY. It was there Idie began to pursue a college degree, eventually earning a masters and a second child (Sean Corrigan). She worked full time and went to school full time to make that happen and watching her do that as young child 8-12 years old was one of the many aspects that influenced my own ambitions and career down the road. She chose to go into the teaching profession and began her career at Eastern High School teaching Spanish and Humanities, sponsoring extra curricular clubs and talent shows for the students. Her time there held some of her most fondest teaching memories. She was very passionate about teaching. She absolutely loved teaching children and fought very hard to continue doing so, even through the most difficult of circumstances. She finished her teaching career at Highland Middle School, ultimately retiring in 2018 to continue battling cancer - a diagnosis she received 10 years prior. My mother battled stage 4 cancer four times since 2008. And kept working through most of it. Her faith and determination to persevere led her almost to the finish line. Almost.
On the 13th of November she entered the hospital to have what was supposed to have been the end to this cancer journey — a bone marrow transplant from her sister, and 8 days later contracted COVID-19 from a hospital staff member. She died as a result of these complications.
She is survived by her daughter-Crystal Corrigan, son-Sean Corrigan, Son in law, James Vogel, mother- Isabel Guerra, Sister-Caridad Garcia, step-sister Lizet Torres, nephews- Elijah and Robert, aunts- Anicia Morales and Victoria Blanco, Cousins Susan Perez, Janet Martin, Alex Hernandez, Ingrid Cupeiro Milian, Caridad Gonzalez, Herman Torres
