Howell Isaac Moore, Sr.

October 3, 1924 — March 9, 2024

Howell Isaac Moore, Sr., born October 3, 1924 in Panora, Guthrie County, Iowa to Ora Luther and Bertha Imogine Moore. The first of six siblings, Howell's service to his family, community and country defined nearly a century of love and devotion throughout his life.

Howell's early life of farm work laid the path for his strong work ethic and ultimately led him to a full and successful life. His World War II military service began on April 2, 1943 with basic training leading him to Louisville, Kentucky. He met Gloria Jean Specht at a military ball that year and began a courtship and love that would endure a lifetime.

Howell was deployed at part of the L Company 346th battalion 87th Infantry in the European Theatre. As a proud United States Serviceman, Howell served on the frontlines as an infantry man. During the Battle of the Bulge in January 1945 he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. He was also awarded the Bronze Star for his service. With the war concluded and being healed from his wounds he was sent to assist with occupation efforts including chauffeuring officers and setting up officer's clubs.

Following his military service, Howell returned to Louisville to continue this courtship with Gloria, marrying on February 7, 1946. Their marriage produced two children, Howell Junior "Sonny" and Robert.

Howell Sr. found work at International Harvester and used his exceptional mathematical skills in finance and accounting work throughout his life. He was past master of Preston Masonic Lodge #281.

Howell Sr. and Gloria divorced in 1974 and Howell remarried to Dorothy Knight in 1978. They resided in New Albany, Indiana for three decades and maintained a winter home in Florida in later years.

At the age of 90 Howell charted another chapter in life as he reconnected with Gloria and rekindled a love and connection that endured more than 70 years, proving you're never too old to be true and brave in matters of the heart.

Howell Sr. spent his final years in health and happiness at Creekside on Bardstown assisted living there he had any friends. Where he enjoyed the nearly constant company of his oldest son and devoted caregiver, Howell Junior.

Howell Sr. is preceded in death by his parents, all siblings but his youngest sibling, Doris. Additionally, Gloria Jean Moore and Dorothy Moore, his son Robert Moore.

Howell is survived by a large and loving family. His oldest son, Howell Junior "Sonny" (Linda), daughter-in-law Louise Lord Moore of Quebec. His grandchildren, Matthew (Allyson), Benjamin (Dr. Tadd Roberts), Annie (Mike Mennillo), Genevieve (Kenny Haligua) both of Montreal, Quebec. Additionally, Howell's legacy of compassion and unconditional love will certainly be carried on by his 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will occur from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12 and continue from 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13 at Newcomer Funeral Home at 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville. Funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
