Howard Whitehead

Howard Whitehead passed away on October 1, 2026. He was born on March 27, 1931, in Whitley City, Kentucky, and lived a life marked by service, faith, and dedication to others.

Howard was a proud Army veteran who served in the Korean War. He also devoted 34 years of service to the Louisville Police Department before his retirement, a career that reflected his steady commitment to his community and to public service.

Faith was an important part of Howard’s life. He served as a Deacon for Parkwood Baptist Church and Auburndale Baptist Church, offering his time and leadership in both congregations. He was also deeply involved in a number of civic and fraternal organizations. He was a member of Valley-Daylight Lodge #511, where he was a 32nd degree Mason. He was also a member of the Kosair Shriners and Scottish Rite. As well as, the American Legion Post 229 and the River City Fraternal Order of Police.

Beyond his many years of service, Howard enjoyed traveling and fixing and repairing things, interests that reflected both his curiosity and his practical nature. He will be remembered with respect and gratitude for the many ways he served his country, his city, his church, and the organizations that were important to him.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents Luther and Elsie Whitehead; his 4 siblings and his loving wife of 72 years Ella Mae Whitehead.  They had a wonderful life together and shared many special times. Howard was a dedicated father to Janet and Diane and a loving Papa to Stephanie, Natalie and Starr. 

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Louisville, 10304 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, Kentucky 40272. A Masonic Service will take place there at 7:00 p.m. that evening. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Louisville. A Graveside Service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Louisville Memorial Gardens - West, 4400 Dixie Highway, Louisville, Kentucky 40216.

The family asks that donations in Howard's memory be made to Hosparus of Louisville or Auburndale Baptist Church, 5590 Bruce Avenue, Louisville, KY 40214.
