Hilda Graybeal, a beloved matriarch and devoted member of her community, passed away on February 20, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on May 15, 1932, in Petersburg, Tennessee, Hilda was the cherished daughter of the late James and Velna (Haislip) Smith. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Lois LaMaster, who will be remembered fondly alongside her.
Hilda's life was marked by her unwavering devotion to her family. She was a proud wife to Kenneth Wayne Graybeal for an incredible 75 years, a partnership that was a testament to their love and commitment to one another. Together, they built a loving household where family ties flourished. Hilda is survived by her husband, Kenneth; her sons, James Ross (Abbie) Graybeal and Michael Wayne (Nancy) Graybeal; as well as her two grandsons, Todd Bindner (Joni) and Jonathan Graybeal (Elizabeth). Hilda's legacy continues through her two great-granddaughters, Emma Graybeal and Addyston Maxey, and two great-grandsons, Colt Bindner and Cristian Maxey, all of whom she adored.
Throughout her life, Hilda found joy in many hobbies and interests. She took great pride in her role as a beautician and shop owner, where she brightened the lives of those around her with her skills and compassion. Hilda cherished her relationships with her sisters-in-law, viewing them more as sisters than in-laws, which further enriched her life. Her passion for nurturing was evident in her love for flowers and caring for houseplants; one remarkable plant had thrived for over 40 years under her attentive care. She also enjoyed playing games and immersing herself in reading, finding both entertainment and relaxation in these pastimes.
An active member of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky, Hilda's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She held a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, eagerly anticipating her reunion in heaven. Her warmth, kindness, and steadfast spirit left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Visitation will be from 12:30 pm until the time of the funeral service at 1:30 pm on Thursday, February 26, 2026 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, KY 40243) with burial to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions in Hilda’s memory be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
Hilda Graybeal will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but her legacy of love and devotion will continue to inspire those who knew her.
