Helen Ruth Smith Carter, born on January 3, 1937, in Elizabeth, Indiana, passed away on April 26, 2025. She was a remarkable woman whose life journey was characterized by her unwavering commitment to her family and her faith in God.

Helen was the proud mother of her son, Walter (Sandy) Smith Jr., and a cherished grandmother to her grandson, Chad Smith. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Susan Smith. Her family was always at the center of her heart, and she took immense pride in the accomplishments and happiness of her loved ones.

Helen was predeceased by her parents, Cody Payton and Gladys (Brengman) Payton. She also mourned the loss of her sons, David Smith and Lester Smith, as well as her sister, Mary Byerly, and her brother, Joseph Payton.

Throughout her life, Helen exemplified resilience, kindness, and unwavering faith. Her dedication to her family was her proudest accomplishment, and her legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be remembered fondly for her warm spirit and the love that she so freely shared.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 1, 2025 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). Her Funeral Service will be at 1:00 pm on Thursday, at the funeral home with burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Elizabeth, Indiana.
