Hazel Nestmann Cowgell passed away on her 80th birthday, July 13, 2017, at her home in Louisville, Ky. She was born in Wheeling, WV in 1937 to George and Ruby Nestmann. Her family, including her older sister Carol, moved to Louisville a few years after her birth.
In her youth, she was an avid horsewoman, and this love of horses continued until her death. She loved to read, especially fantasy books and that love extended to playing D&D with her family and to spending many hours writing stories in that beloved genre. She was a skilled and dedicated craftswoman as well, selling them in fleamarkets and craftshows when she was younger and making many treasures for her family over the years.
She and Earl F. Cowgell, Jr. were wed on March 6, 1959 and they remained together 37 years until his death on March 20, 2007. Their first child Anthony Brent Cowgell was born in their first year of marriage but he predeceased both of them in 2006. She is survived by her other children, Phoebe Rochelle, Jean Schlisser and her spouse Tony, and her youngest John William Cowgell and his spouse Aidan.
Hazel also leaves behind ten grandchildren (Josie Penton and her spouse Tim, Amanda Cowgell, Phoebe Endacott, William Rochelle, Jessica Chasteen and her spouse Chris, and John, Jacob, and Jeanette Hansen) and four great grandchildren (Timothy and Krysta Penton and Kinsey and Mara Chasteen).
We will say goodby at a service in the pavillion at Kentucky Veteran's Cemetary Central on July 25, 2017. Her ashes will be joining those of her husband who is already interred there.
