Auguster Clark Roberts, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend departed this life on June 20, 2018 at the age of 80.
Gus was born on January 1, 1938, in Bessemer, Alabama to the late Ellis and Genora (Mullins) Roberts. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 45 years Barbara Jean Roberts and sister Betty Jean Herndon. He dedicated his life to Christ at an early age in Bessemer, Alabama at Antioch Baptist Church.
In 1952 after the passing of their grandmother Lilian Bush he and his sister moved to Covington, Kentucky to live with their mother.
Gus played basketball for four years at William Grant, earning varsity letters in all three years. He was a starter and a stand out player on the 1957 district championship team was the first African American team in KHSAA history to have won this tournament.
After high school, Gus played for one year at Wilbur Forest College before going to play semi-professional baseball for the Cincinnati Tigers.
February 14, 1970 Gus married the love of his life Barbara, she preceded him in death on July 19, 2015 and they were married 45 years. In 1975 Gus became and engineer for CSX formerly L&N Railroad and was the first African American Engineer in Kentucky. He retired in September of 1995 and was able to do what he loved to do and that was to go fishing. Gus loved his family and cherished his wife. He looked forward and attended ball games and anything dealing with his grandkids. He was an avid fisherman and chess player.
Auguster Clark Roberts is survived by his son Michael Anthony Roberts (Triquina), daughter Cassaundra Antoinette Moore (Kevin), ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is survived by sister-in-law Vimala Devi, brother-in-law Albert Smith, Jr. (Vernell) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Gus will truly be missed. Everyone that knew him loved him and always had a smile on his face. His stories, history lessons and wisdom will be missed. He was a big man with a huge heart.
We will miss him but God needed him more. A servant to many, selfless and a true man of God. No more pain, no more suffering. He fought a good fight. We thank the Lord for lending us Gus and this is not goodbye, it is see you soon.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of the funeral service 12:00 pm on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, KY 40243) with burial to follow at Louisville Memorial Gardens East.
