Gertrude (Trudy) Roecker Gray, 93, widow of William R. Gray, Jr. passed away on February 18, 2022. She was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Berta and William Roecker on December 12, 1928.
She graduated from Shawnee High School and Ursuline College in Louisville and began teaching Spanish in the Jefferson County School System. Searching for an adventure, Trudy drove to Mexico City, Mexico in her Studebaker and worked at the U.S. Embassy there for a few years. Upon returning to Louisville, she met and married Bob Gray.
In 1972 the Grays moved to Richmond, Virginia where she taught Spanish at Armstrong High School. Upon her retirement, Trudy was a gift to her community.She spent many years as a volunteer completing research and guided tours at Maymont Historical Estate and Park. She taught citizenship classes and hosted visitors to Richmond through the People to People organization. She was very active in the AAUW chapter in Richmond. Trudy was well known for her annual Kentucky Derby parties and her love of traveling the world. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Trudy was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret R. Owen, step son William Gray, and her companion of many years, Fernando Ottati.
She is survived by her nieces Deborah Gregory-Dailey of Aiken, SC., and Sharon Owen of Louisville, KY, her great nieces Ashley Gregory of Charleson S.C., Elizabeth Elliott, Katherine Theobald and Emily Jarvis all of Louisville, Ky., grandchildren Brad Gray of Medina, WA, Rachel Pathak of Baltimore, MD, Adam Gray of Irmo, SC and members of their families.
The family would like to express appreciation to Trudy's dear friends Linda Kish and Jane Logan for their care and friendship.
A private family celebration of life is planned.
