Gertrude M. Fischer

March 5, 1925 — December 4, 2016

Gertrude M. "Trudy" Fischer passed away Sunday, December 4, 2016, at Norton Brownsboro Hospital after a brief illness. Trudy was a long time resident of Parrs at Springhurst. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Gertrude Gagel; siblings, Elmer, Check, Bonnie, and Betty. She is survived by her three sons, Terry (Debby), Gary (Barbara), and Jerry (Tess); grandchildren, Amber, Jon, Brittany, Wesley, Patrick, Ashley, and Alyssa; and great-grandchildren, Sofia, Brianna, Olivia, Adam and Noah.

Trudy was born into the Gagel farming family on Lower Hunters Trace, the 3rd of 5 children. She graduated from Valley High School and went to work at the DuPont Chemical Company in support of the war effort. After the war she met and married the father of her two oldest sons, Terry and Gary. Following the end of her marriage Trudy made Louisville Police Department history by being hired as one of the first female detectives on the Department. She remained with the LPD for 27 years. A second marriage brought her third son, Jerry, during this time.

After retiring from the LPD, she became a special agent for the former L & N Railroad serving in Louisville and Jacksonville, FL. Her law enforcement career continued when she returned to Louisville and was hired by the Jefferson County Fiscal Court as a Special Law Enforcement Officer serving an additional 13 years. Trudy was a familiar face at the Hall of Justice and the Old Jail Building. Retiring for the final time, she lived a very active life spending many days at the Lakeside Swim Club, and walking in her Highlands neighborhood. She traveled internationally from Japan to Paris. Born into the Catholic faith, she attended St. Raphael prior to moving from the neighborhood. She lived life to the fullest and always on her own terms.
