Gerry Lyn (Mapes) Proctor, 74, New Albany, Indiana, passed away at her residence on January 8, 2017. She was born April 18, 1942 in Gary, Indiana to Abner and Roberta (Hall) Mapes. Gerry was a graduate of Saint Joseph Nursing School in Louisville, worked as a Labor and Delivery nurse at St. Anthony's Hospital for 29 years, and retired to help take care of her grandchildren. She was a faithful member at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church where she was very involved in ministry to young people on the parish and deanery level.
Gerry worked numerous retreats for Catholic Youth Ministries and gave thousands of volunteer hours to make the deanery youth rally and retreat program special. She directed Our Lady's "Choices of the Heart" eighth grade retreat for years, touching the lives of many OLPH graduates. For her dedication to young people, she received the highest award presented in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis by the New Albany Deanery with the St. John Bosco award in 1986.
She is survived by her loving husband of 53 plus years, Walter "Joe" Proctor Jr.; her sister, Holly Williams (Steve), Wheatfield, Indiana; her children, Julie Sanders and Jody Proctor along with two grandchildren, Elisabeth "Lilly" and Hart Sanders.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 12, 2017 from 2 to 8 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, IN 47150) and from 9 to 10:30 AM on Friday, January 13, 2017, followed by her Funeral Mass at 11 AM at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church (1752 Scheller Lane, New Albany, IN 47150) with burial at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in New Albany.
In lieu of flowers, memorial expressions may be made to the Golden Retriever Rescue and Adoption of Needy Dogs (GRRAND) (P. O. Box 6132, Louisville, KY 40206).
