Geraldine (“Gerri”) McCoomer, age 76, of Louisville, departed this life Saturday, April 4, 2026, and entered eternal life. Gerri was born to Charles E. and Margaret Craft Wordlow on January 2, 1950, in Louisville, Kentucky. To this union were born two boys and twin girls.
Gerri accepted Christ in 1962 (?) and was baptized by Rev. Thurmond Coleman, Sr. at First Baptist Church of Jeffersontown, where she faithfully served and shared her love of music as a member of the Sun Beams, Junior Choir, and the Adult Choir. She attended Jeffersontown Colored School and later graduated from Eastern High School. Following graduation, Gerri pursued her calling to care for others by attending nursing school, where she earned her LPN. Throughout her career, she blessed countless patients with her compassionate spirit and gentle presence while serving at Park DuValle, Children’s Hospital, Jewish Hospital Hand Center, and Our Lady of Peace, where she retired in 2015. Even in retirement, her heart for service never wavered, as she continued caring for the elderly part-time, something she truly loved. Gerri was an exceptional caregiver who brought light and comfort to everyone she encountered. Her joyful laugh and radiant smile left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
On June 27, 1970, Gerri was joined in holy matrimony with Stallard V. McCoomer. They were together until his passing in 2015, to this union two sons were born Damon and Tyrone McCoomer.
Above all, Gerri cherished her family, whom she loved deeply. She found great joy in her daily phone calls with Betty Moore and Jimmy Hightower, talks that meant the world to her. On warm, sunny days, you could often find her sitting on her porch working on a crossword puzzle and simply enjoying the beauty of the day (and the sights of Watterson Trail).
Gerri was preceded in death by her husband Stallard V. McCoomer, parents Charles E. and Margaret Craft Wordlow, her brothers, Charles A. Wordlow (“Patsy”), her twin sister, Nadine (“Nicki”) Wordlow, and her brother, Rudolph (“Rudy”) S. Wordlow.
Gerri leaves to cherish her memory her aunt, Jean Burks; sons, Tyrone McCoomer and Damon McCoomer(Kristen); grandchildren, Lydia McCoomer, Kayla McCoomer, and Trey McCoomer; nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of family and friends.
Visitation will be 10:00am-12:00pm on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, followed by a celebration of Gerri's life at 12:00pm, all at First Baptist Church of Jeffersontown, 10600 Watterson Trail, Louisville, KY 40299.
